Samuel Lewis Shoemaker, went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife Sylvia on June 16, 2023, after a long period of declining health. Born on September 18, 1943, to Sam Shoemaker and Fanny Ruth “Frisky” Mills, Sammy (as he was known to his many friends) grew up in Archer, Florida where he was a member of the Archer Baptist Church and graduated from Gainesville High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and served thirty-three years as a First Responder with the Alachua County Sheriff's Department from which he retired as Captain in June of 2001.

Sandra Ann Smith Greene, age 77, of Fort White, Florida, formerly of Lake Asbury, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022, at Lake City Medical Center. Born August 24, 1944, in Gainesville, she grew up with an affinity for music, later receiving vocal training and singing in a number of solo and ensemble performances and stage musicals at Gainesville High School and the University of Florida.

A former Lincoln woman and her husband died Sunday evening following a one-vehicle accident in Champaign County.

 

Donna K. Steffens Sparkman, 38, and George R. Sparkman, Jr., 37, of Bement were traveling in a pickup truck on Philo Road just north of Tolono, when the truck apparently went out of control and left the roadway.  Witnesses saw a cloud of smoke come from the truck before it left the roadway, according to the Champaign County coroner’s office.

Merlyne Swilley Brooker, 71, peacefully passed away into her heavenly home on Friday, November 11, 2016 with her family by her side.  Merlyne was born in Alachua, FL. on November 26, 1944 to Ivey and Elise Swilley.  She graduated from Gainesville High School in 1962, worked as a legal secretary and then helped found and manage the family’s business, Brooker’s Pest Control.



The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to her loving caregivers at both Ayers Rehabilitation Center and Haven Hospice.

  • Dr. Sandra Swinford Diaz of Gainesville died Thursday after a five-year battle with cancer. She was 61.

  • Dr. Diaz was born in Fort Bragg, N.C., and moved to Gainesville with her parents after World War II.



After receiving her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Florida, she worked as a social worker in Alachua and Nassau counties, and then as a family counselor in Miami-Dade County. She returned to UF in the early 1980s to pursue her Ph.D., and joined the staff at UF's Student Mental Health Center.
