William A. (Mac) McGriff, III, 72, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on September 18, 2016 at Community Hospice of Northeast Florida after a courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Mac was born on March 10, 1944 in Gainesville, Florida to William Augustus McGriff, Jr. and JacquelineTexadaMcGriff. 

Mac graduated from Gainesville High School and the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1969 and later received UF's Distinguished Alumnus award in 1993. 

Mac began his career with Charter Investment and Development Company (CID) in 1969 in Miami, Florida. He moved to Jacksonville in 1973 as executive vice president of CID which, soon after, merged with Charter Mortgage Company (later named Alliance Mortgage Company), where he served as president for 15 years until 1989. In addition, Mac was the former president of the Florida Mortgage Bankers Association of Florida and former chairman of the board of directors of Associated Industries of Florida. 

Beginning in 1986, Mac served as a volunteer board member and eventually chairman of University Medical Center. In 1996, he became interim CEO of University Medical Center, a position he maintained until 1999. Mac was instrumental in forming the relationship between University Medical Center and Shands HealthCare, helping build what is now UF Health Jacksonville. 

He served the University of Florida for decades in an array of capacities, including president of the Foundation, as the Jacksonville representative on the Board of Regents, and as the chairman of the UF Board of Trustees. Mac was on the UF Athletic Association board from 2003-2011. He served as president of the UAA Board from 2006-2011. 

Mac also served on numerous volunteer boards in the community including Community Hospice, Wolfson Children's Hospital and Leadership Jacksonville. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth (Libby) Edwards McGriff; sons, William A. McGriff, IV (Jill) and David Edwards McGriff (Andrea); daughter, Casey Ann McGriff; brother, John T. McGriff (Libby); eight grandchildren: Jacqueline Lane McGriff, Margaret Ann McGriff, William A McGriff, V, Caulder Elizabeth McGriff, Riley Grace McGriff, Thomas Albert Chown, III, Mary-Mac Elizabeth Chown, Jacqueline Texada Drayton; and countless extended family members. 

A funeral service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 7500 Southside Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32256 at 2 PM, Wednesday, September 21. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the McGriff family would be grateful for donations made in Mac McGriff's honor to one of the following organizations:
